You're Not Overwhelmed You're Just A Procrastinator
I was once queen of procrastination. I found a million and one reasons, daily not to do some of the most important things I needed to do. I always felt so overwhelmed, but really it was because I was choosing to put things off until the last minute. Choosing to be careless about responsibilities resulted in my falling behind. That is when I realized that I needed to find a way to gain power over my procrastination. It’s almost as if we create false logic in our mind that support our laziness and lack of desire to complete tasks. Talking to a friend one day, I explained how my procrastination turns into pure laziness. She said to me “What if you’re procrastinating on the very things that you are called to do in life? What if you are lazy in pursuing your purpose?” I never thought of it that way, in fact, I never thought of it at all.
In the past, I always had the mindset of “I’ll get to it when I get to it.” What we avoid doing is often times what we should be doing more of. I guess being aware of our avoidance brings awareness to our procrastinating habits, but awareness is half the battle. It’s having the “Just Do It” attitude even in your idle moments. It’s making the conscious effort to get things done when you’d rather spend hour’s binge-watching Netflix eating unhealthy foods. Procrastination doesn’t cease overnight. It takes commitment. How does one learn to tackle their procrastinating behavior? Glad you asked! Below are a few tips that helped me avoid being Procrastinating Patty 204/7- 365.
Create A Daily Task List: I know, I know to-do list seem so mundane, but they’re what you need if you want to be proactive in your daily goals. If you’re an iPhone owner, the reminder app right along with your notes app is a very helpful tool to start using. It allows you to set reminders, title them as you like and arrange a specific date and time that you’d like to be reminded to complete that task. That way, you can set your work schedule up with as many tasks as you like and as far out as you need to. Thanks to the new iOS update, you can now share your notes + reminders with other iPhone users. This helps for you and your friends to hold each other accountable.
Be Clear About Your Intentions: Half the time we commit to things with no real plan of doing them. We also commit to things and aren’t certain about. Are we committing to something that is faithful to our hearts or we’re passionate about? It’s important to know these things. If you’re clear about something from the very beginning that limits you putting it off only because you never wanted to do it or your heart wasn’t in it the first place. When you’re intentional in your everyday life, it runs smoother.
Limit Your Distractions: You can’t work on those blog post that you’re behind on if you’re scrolling twitter and checking Instagram. Life is full of distractions. These days our distractions are more socially based and it’s actually hard to not be tuned in all the time. When we’re away from it all too long, we feel like we’re missing out on something. The FOMO gets too real. Trust me, you aren’t missing anything when you’re busy getting your shit together.
Work Realistically: If you have a week’s worth of work that needs to be done and you think you’re going to successfully complete it over the weekend, you’re tripping. Working responsible includes setting realistic goals and expectations for yourself. Give yourself the time you need to finish things. Don’t put the task off until the point you’re scrambling to finish them. Often times what we rush through ends up being half-assed with a lot overlooked. Take your time, but most importantly work smarter, not harder.
Get A Set Schedule: If you lack time management skills you lack a lot in life. Being aware of your day is crucial and so critical. You ever sit around for hours doing nothing and realize at 12 am that you have something to do? Then you’re spending valuable sleep time completing task knowing you have to be up in a few hours. It’s important to set a schedule for work so that you’re on top of what needs be done. This way you know what time you have to do nothing, work and then prepare for whatever else it is for you to do. Which brings me to my next task…
Get The Proper Rest: If you’re always tired and not feeling well rested you’re going to procrastinate and put things off to sleep. I cannot stress enough how much energy it takes to make it through the day successfully and not feel like you’re going to pass out by 2 pm. No, getting proper rest does not mean two hours of sleep and 5 cups of coffee the following day just to function. It means actually resting your body, sleeping so that you’re well energized and ready to take on the world and whatever task may come your way.
Not being a procrastinator is hard. I find that the less you’re truly passionate about something, the less you desire you have to accomplish it. You can desire something so much, but when you lack the passion for actually pursuing it and being serious about it, you’ll never fully commit to it. Anybody can put things off and make excuses. It is those that are committed to getting it done that are the real champions. Let’s be more passionate about not being procrastinators.
